Review & Description

Varieties are: Numex Twilight: Sunset-colored fruits start out purple and ripen to yellow, orange, and then red. 12" tall when grown in pots, and 24-30" tall in the field. When spaced closely together, plants make a uniform and colorful hedge. 3/8" x 3/4" fruits are edible and very hot. Bred by Paul Bosland, Jaime Iglesias, and Max Gonzalez at New Mexico State Univ. from a semi-wild plant found growing in Jalisco, Mexico. Piquin-type chile, has partial resistance to tobacco etch virus and beet curly top virus. Ht. 12-30". Prairie Fire: A great border, edible ground cover or container plant. 1/2" x 1" fruits project above foliage, changing from chartreuse to cream to yellow to orange and finally to red. Some purple streaking in cooler weather. Flavor is bright, fruity, and pungent! For use in floral designs as cut branches and as a bedding plant. Ht. 6-12". Pretty in Purple: Can be used for edible landscaping. Leaves of these spreading but upright, avg. 2' plants are solid purple or variegated purple and green. The 3/4", rounded, glossy peppers are deep purple and ripen to yellow, orange, and finally scarlet. Each plant has mixed colors. Small, purple flowers. The pungent fruits may be used as a hot pepper seasoning. Original seeds for Pretty In Purple were sent to Johnny's by Dale McCorkindale, Flower & Garden Magazine. Ht. 18-24". Sangria: A great ornamental with "child-safe", non-pungent fruit. Dark purple peppers change to bright red as they ripen. The 2-3" fruit stands tall above the contrasting green foliage, making Sangria a focal point in garden beds or containers. Read more
